Participation in the interpreting workshops is compulsory. An unjustified absence in more than 25% of the practical lessons (i.e., 3 cross-language or language-specific interpreting workshops) implies a refusal of admission to the exams.
Attendance in the workshops is not only compulsory but also necessary for a successful performance in the interpreting exams. During the workshops, interpreting skills are taught systematically, students receive personalized feedback and learn to operate the interpreting equipment. Interpreter trainees are expected to take responsibility for their own learning process, and the workshops are essential components of their training.
Moreover, each student bears responsibility for the successful completion of the learning activities and their presence is required to organize the various group activities covered during the interpreting workshops.
The student is able to communicate effectively in speech with a high degree of specificity in various professional contexts as a multilingual (English and Dutch) communication specialist and/or as a (court) interpreter.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 100% of the final mark.
Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
The assessment comprises two different exam parts:
1. Consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting - 60% of the total final mark
2. Court interpreting - 40% of the total final mark
In order to pass the course in the first session, the student must pass the exams of both modules. If a student fails one or more modules, the final mark will be the lowest grade achieved. Partial results of the exam components can be transferred to the second exam session if officially requested by the student after publication of the final marks.
A student who did not pass the exams of the interpreting workshop in the second examination period and registers again in the next academic year can apply for partial exemptions within a period of five days after the announcement of the results of the second examination period.
The modules of the interpreting workshops are strongly linked together. The partial exemptions for the different modules are granted upon request (see above) and students will not be required to take the exam for the granted exemptions. As a prerequisite, however, the student will have to attend and participate in all the practical classes of the interpreting workshop again.
