The course starts with a review of the differing perspectives on the
ageing process and the key features of ageing within the social
sciences, and we make an overview with concern to recent theory
development and research.
We consider the impact of demographic and social change during the
twentieth century on how we define an ageing population.
Once the general (meta) theoretical framework has been acquired, a
number of applications are discussed which are specific in terms of the
target groups they pertain to, such as images of ageing, gender and
ethnicity in the social structuring of later life, housing and living
arrangements of elderly people, volunteering, age-friendly environments,
working situation, sexuality, life-long learning.....
On these topics the students have to summarise and discuss* some of the articles and papers.

The course draws on a range of book chapters as well as articles from international journals related to social gerontology.
Specific gerontological themes and practical applications can be analysed from a scientific and broad perspective, taking into account recent theory and research.
Presenting a paper.
Looking at the demographical challenges from an evidence-based point of view, taking into account the social status of older people in society.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 100% of the final mark.
