Course Content

This course focuses on two mayor fields: clinical practice and research. As a guideline, the WHO definition of 'health' is used, paying not only attention to 'disease' but also giving a prominent role to the social, psychological and physical functioning. Also more recent definitions will be discussed (e.g. positive health concept). The importance of multidisciplinary and "comprehensive geriatric assessment" is emphasised. The most important validated and internationally used scales are discussed in order to perform these evaluations: social situation, general health, behaviour, cognition, daily activities, physical condition (i.e. mobility, pressure ulcer prevention, nutrition situation, etc.), problems of care, general situation. The principles of clinical decision making (notions of sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, …) are presented. The importance of the International Classification of Functioning, developed in 2001 and introduced by the WHO is highlighted as framework for interdisciplinary practice and research. Furthermore, we will pay attention to how to develop and validate assessment tools or how to translate and validate them. Clinimetrics are an important part of the course.

Learning Outcomes

Algemene competenties

KNOWLEDGE

After this course the Research Master of Gerontological Sciences has knowledge and understanding of:

  • Clinimetrical properties of assessment tools;
  • Scale development;
  • The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF);
  • Clinical and diagnostically reasoning and decision making;
  • Different assessment domains and tools as examples.

INSIGHT

After this course, the students have insight in:

  • Development and validation of assessment tools;
  • Translation and validation of assessment tools;
  • Appropriate use in research as selection and description of sample and outcome measures.

SKILLS

After this course the students are able to:

-  use the ICF;

- critically judge an assessment tool;

- discuss the practical applications of the various assessment techniques and scales;

- use the most common assessment methods in the field (e.g. screening tools frailty,  geriatric profile, comprehensive geriatric assessment, cognitive assessment, activities of daily life, mood assessment, physical assessment, etc.);

- systematically perform a search to find the most suitable assessment tool including its psychometrical properties;

- interpret the outcome of a scale-based evaluation and situate it in terms of clinical decision making.

ATTITUDES

The Research Master of Gerontological Sciences has

  • a (self-) critical and scientific attitude, focused on the proper use of assessment tools;
  • acquired an attitude of lifelong learning, thereby enabling them to continue to develop on a fully

independent basis and to make adjustments in the domain of gerontological sciences.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen Andere with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

This course comprises different teaching methods to obtain the learning outcomes.

  • Lectures;
  • Exercises including presentations with (peer) feedback:
    • Performing an comprehensive assessment in (real life) research context;
    • Analysing the psychometrical properties of an assessment tool;
    • Applying the ICF in (real life) cases.

      Continuous/permanent evaluation for 60/ 100 (each exercise 20%)

      Exam 40/100 (testing knowledge)
