Course Content

Lecture:

This course deals with the specific problems specific to wireless (and wired) transmission systems and networks, with a focus on source coding and channel coding.

• Sound, image and video: source compression (source coding), storage and transfer
• Signal transmission and channel coding
• Theory of "long" transmission lines
• Operation and construction of the UMTS (3G) and LTE (4G) and 5G system
• Modulation techniques
• Spread spectrum
• Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing
• Guest speakers can be invited for specific topics (in English).

Lab sessions:
In the lab session, the student is confronted with the processing of images and / or sound and / or with the compression techniques for images and / or sound. The student learns to develop apps in which elements of image or sound processing are present.
The student also works with Software Defined Radio components for the transmission theory part.

Course material

Learning Outcomes

  • MaLO_1 To possess advanced application-specific knowledge, understanding and skills in the specialty with attention to the latest developments in technology.
  • MaLO_3 To independently integrate and deepen previously acquired knowledge with a view to the opportunities for innovating practical implementations, whilst being aware of the limits of one's own competencies.
  • MaLO_6 Starting from the acquired discipline-specific and interdisciplinary insights, to select, adapt or if necessary develop, and adequately apply advanced research, design and solution methods. To scientifically process the results, to motivate the adopted choices  based on application-oriented knowledge and the demands of the business context.
  • MaLO_8 To design systems, products, services and processes,  with a focus on innovation and operations. To interpolate and experiment in the business context.
  • MaLO_11 To work on a project in a primarily subject-specific context: to set goals, to monitor the goals and progress of the project. To function as a member of an (inter- and multidisciplinary) team, to start to lead, to be a bridge between management and workplace, to operate in an international or intercultural environment.  To report effectively.
  • MaLO_14 To communicate orally and in writing about one's field in the language or languages relevant to the specialty.
  • MaLO_15 To present and communicate, both in language and graphics, information about the field to colleagues and laymen.

  • MaSLO-ELO_1 To have advanced, application-oriented knowledge, understanding and skills in electronics - ICT, with attention to the latest developments.
  • MaSLO-ELO_2 To possess the scientific basis required for the analysis, modelling and design of electronic and/or IT systems.
  • MaSLO-ELO_3-NW To acquire depth in the field of electronics ICT: networks.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Other Exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Exam time 1st session:
Lecture: oral exam with written preparation: 50% (not transferred to 2nd session)
    Practical exercises: 50%
-evaluation performance of practical exercises : 15% (immediately transferred to 2nd session)
    - report: 15% (transferred to 2nd session if 10/20 or more)
    - presentation slides + answering to questions: 20% (transferred to 2nd session if 10/20 or more)
    Exam time 2nd session
lecture: oral exam with written preparation: 50%
    practical exercises: 50%
    - evaluation performance of practical exercises : 15% (immediately transferred from 1st session)
    - report: 15%
    - presentation slides + answering to questions: 20%

An illegitimate absence of more than 25 % at the practical exercises will result in a refusal to participate in the exercise exam and leads to an absent quotation for the this exam. The sanctions taken in the first exam session are transferred to the second exam session.
