Inhoud

The course offers a first introduction to challenges in the information society in the domain of healthcare and wellbeing. It gives an evaluation of current and prognosis of future developments, discuss what are open questions and existing answers/research paths.

During six lectures, the course will focus on data use in technological applications (data driven technologies and its (potential) societal impacts/ethical issues. Various guest lecturers, all researchers from the VUB, will explain their research area in 6 lectures. They bring you their insight, their disciplinary perspective (e.g. the social sciences, economics, legal, engineering, health …) on challenges and opportunities when using data for health related data driven technologies. These talks will stimulate you to reflect during the seminars and apply it to a use case. The seminars will guide you to select a social problem (related to the annual theme; the theme of 2020-21 ““Your Data or Your Life during the covid19 Pandemic”.) with a technological data component and elaborate on a solution (theoretically/conceptually) considering the different disciplinary perspectives presented in the lectures. To guide you in this process, we will organize seminars to discuss the issues and stimulate your reflection on the topic. You will work on the use case in a small interdisciplinary team, towards a presentation and a final scientific paper which will be evaluated at the end of the course and will determine your final grades for this course.

Bijkomende info

Relevant articles about the guest lecture will be made available to the student, the PowerPoints will be made available via canvas that can help them in the critical reflection developing the use cases.

The location of the guest lectures and other lectures will alternate between Jette and Etterbeek or will be online (after 18.00)

Recordings will be made when the invited speakers agree, but since group interaction is important in this course life attendance is expected.

Leerresultaten

Algemene competenties

The students reflect independently and critically on the sub-topics presented in the lectures and the accompanying annual theme when working out a concrete, realistic case.

The students work together in a professional manner on a specific case in a group with an interdisciplinary character.

The students are able to conduct interdisciplinary scientific research into the broader social annual theme.

The students can communicate their views orally and with the help of a presentation in a clear and understandable way to a wider and interdisciplinary audience.

The student can report in writing in a scientific way.

Beoordelingsinformatie

Aanvullende info evaluatie

The assessment consists of three parts.

The students must be present in the 6 lectures (6x2h).

During the seminars (10x3h) the students must work on a concrete case in a joint paper on the annual theme. For this, the students are divided into interdisciplinary groups.

The assignment of the seminar and focus questions:

● Technology & data: describe the functionality of the used technology and data

● Law: Are there legal issues with this application? (Consider liability, intellectual property, privacy). Further develop these issues.

● Social and ethical issues: what are they? Who are the stakeholders? Work out these issues further.

Next to clarity of argumentation, and a good communication style (written and orally), it is important to blend all different insights from the different disciplines in your groups use case. You will formulate in team advise to different stakeholders involved in you case, based on scientific insights.

The first part of the grades is the case, which is presented twice by the interdisciplinary groups. A first time to fellow students, after which fellow students provide feedback. There are no grades at this point. The students can then update their case and presentation.

The final version of the case is presented to the interdisciplinary team of researchers who gave a guest lecture. This "jury" will grade the case together. This grade counts for 50% of the final mark. One grade is given to the entire group.

The second part of the final grade is the joint group paper for 25% of the total mark of the final assessment. One grade is given for the entire group.

For the final part of the final grade, the students are graded on participation in and individual input during the lectures, the group work on the case and attendance. An individual assessment file is kept for this purpose.
