Offer 2 with catalog number 1023237ANR for all students in the 1st and 2nd semester at a (A) Bachelor - preliminary level.
The aim of this course is to teach students to conduct historical research about the medieval period in an independent way. By way of a series of assignments that need to be completed by each student, the most important historical skills are practised. This independent work is always done within the context of a research theme that changes annually. The assignments consist of a literature assignment, in which a scientific publication has to be assessed critically; a bibliography assignment, in which an annotated bibliography about a subject has to be made; a source assignment, in which a primary source about the subject needs to be analysed; and a research question assignment, in which a relevant research question has to be designed. During the spring, student will report orally about their research activities in a presentation and, as the final step in the process, will write their own scientific paper based on literature and source analysis. During the collective meetings students are given the necessary historical context and an overview of the most important finding aids and sources for the medieval period, which they are supposed to use in their research activities, the assignments are communicated and their results are discussed. During the writing of the scientific paper students are given individual guidance by the lecturing team.
