In the seminar 'Power and Agency in Contemporary History' students take the first steps in locating, consulting and analyzing archival and other sources from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The focus is on dynamics of power and agency in different historical contexts. By examining cultural hierarchies, social processes of discrimination and inequality, as well as forms of activism, students contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between power and agency in history. As part of this seminar, students will complete a series of assignments that help them to gradually develop their historical research skills. The final and most important assignment of the seminar consists of writing a scholarly paper based on original historical research.
Seminar sessions can take place face to face and/or online, depending on the corona measures imposed by the government and the availability of classrooms.
-Students can locate relevant scientific studies and sources related to their research subject.
-Students can critically evaluate and analyze their selected sources.
-Students can incorporate their insights into a scientific paper and communicate their research findings in correct and scholarly language.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
SELF Presentation determines 10% of the final mark.
SELF Practical Assignment determines 30% of the final mark.
SELF Paper determines 60% of the final mark.

To pass, the student must obtain a minimum of 50% for the final paper. If this is not the case, the final mark for the course is the partial mark obtained for this final paper. In the second exam period, only the final paper will be marked and this will be the final mark for the course.
