Course Content

The course consists of two parts: lectures (39 hours) and self-study on the basis of a handbook (130 hours).

The lectures offer an overview of the general characteristics and a chronological overview of Classical Antiquity (ca. 800 BC - ca. 500 AD) and the Middle Ages (ca. 500 AD - 1500 AD .) on the one hand, and a number of topics (capita selecta) in the political, social, economic and cultural fields which are discussed on the basis of primary sources on the other hand.

The handbooks (see below), which must be read through self-study, offer a chronological overview of Classical Antiquity and the Middle Ages and serve as a background for situating the thematic lessons in time and space.

The manuals:

L. de Blois en R.J. van der Spek, Een kennismaking met de oude wereld, Coutinho 2017.

I. Bejczy, Een kennismaking met de Middeleeuwse wereld, Coutinho 2004.

A syllabus with primary sources (in translation) will be made available through Canvas.

The manuals are not discussed during class, but must be read independently. It is of course possible to ask questions on the handbook during the lectures. The manuals are part of the exam material.
