Enrolling in Deutsche Morphosyntax means that you simultaneously take 'Deutsche Grammatik und Linguistik: Einführung' or have successfully passed ‘Deutsche Grammatik und Linguistik: Einführung’. If you are enrolled in a preparatory programme you can register this course without restrictions.

Course Content

The course content consists of 3 parts: 1) word formation, 2) syntax and 3) text grammar. The course deals with the theme "Analyzing humor linguistically". The exercises also play an important role, such as, for example, giving a presentation on the theme in German.

All course materials (course, texts, exercises and powerpoint presentations) will be made available on Canvas. Students are also expected to take notes during the course.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

- Students have insight in the linguistic analysis of the morphology, syntax and text grammar of German.

- Students are able to give a linguistic presentation in German.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
PRAC Presentation determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

written exam with a relative weight of 80 which comprises 80% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

oral presentation with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The final grade is established on the basis of a written exam (80%) and a presentation (20%). Language mistakes will be taken into account during the evaluation. Students must participate in all parts of the evaluation process in order to pass the course. Students have to succeed in all parts of the evaluation process (= min. 10/20) to obtain a pass mark for the whole course. Students who fail to participate in all the parts of the evaluation procedure will be automatically marked as ‘absent’. Students can transfer to the next exam session the results of those parts of the evaluation process for which they have obtained a pass mark (= min. 10/20). If the student did not obtain a pass mark or was absent for the presentation in the first exam session, the presentation has to be held in the form of an oral exam in the second exam session.

The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
