Course Content

This course is an introduction to the history of French Literature.

This course aims to provide students with basic knowledge of the French literary periods from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, its most important writers and literary movements. It will highlight the continuities but also ruptures in literary production and the originality or conformism of each author in relation to his or her period. Special attention will be paid to contextualization (intertextual, historical, biographical).

The students will be asked to read the texts (extracts from an anthology of texts) before each class and to prepare the theory in the manual (Xavier Darcos, Histoire de la littérature française, Paris, Hachette, 2019). During class, there will be room for textual analysis, interaction and discussion. In addition to the anthology of texts, students are also asked to read 4 novels.
