Course Content

Study of specific translation problems in translation from Dutch into French and from French into Dutch; translation of simple texts, mostly from Dutch into French; contrasting analysis of the difficulties involved; listening and writing exercises; vocabulary exercises. During the classes, students will also perform listening and oral exercises (some examples are paraphrasing, translating instantaneously from the page, preparing an oral summary of a text, public speaking) as a preparation for and in support of written translation activities.

Eindcompetenties

Upon successful completion of the course, students

  • can translate a wide range of French texts to Dutch and vice versa (French language proficiency level: B2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages);
  • can paraphrase and/or summarize a range of source texts in the source and target languages;  
  • can find an adequate solution to translation problems;
  • have strengthened their understanding of the specificity of the French language (grammar and syntax) and widened their range of expression (words and phrases).

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk examen with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

    Note: Written exam with a weighting factor of 100 and thus 100% of the total final mark. (idem second session)
