We will propose the concept of “aesthetic literacy” to understand what learning of/with film and the performing arts means. This complex idea points to different aspects of arts education: from the decoding of a specific art language to understanding the critical relation of the art form to the broader world. The central question of this course is: “how can we broaden, deepen and improve the aesthetic literacy of cultural participants?”
We focus on three art forms: movies, music and theatre/performance. What do these arts forms tell us about the world? Which language do they use? We also pay attention to concrete initiatives and organizations (within the cultural field) which focus on education in film and the performing arts.
More information on course content and materials will follow during the first lesson

Within the PRAC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Throughout the semester there will be 3 assignments around certain components (cultural field, film, music). At the end of the semester there will be an oral exam, which consists of the presentation and discussion of a research assignment and a knowledge question about the course content. The evaluation is further explained in class and on Canvas.
Students must score at least 10/20 on each section (assignments & exam) to pass this course. If you have a failing grade on one of the two components, you will be assigned a 9/20 or or the total grade over the two parts (if that is lower than 9) as your final score. The partial grade for which you passed in the first session may be carried over to the second session and therefore does not have to be taken again; this also holds for the individual assignments of the part "assignments". The student who still wishes to retake the task sends an e-mail to the instructor. The partial results of the individual assignments are not transferable to the next academic year.
If you are "absent" on one of the two sections (exam or assignments) your will get an "absent" on the final grading. If you do not submit one of the assignemtn, you will get an "abstent" for the section "assignments.
