Course Content

During this internship, students are able to discover and experience the daily practice of the work and organizational psychologist. The intern’s task is to observe five activities on the work floor:

1.    Intake interview/consultation with the business where a question or emergency is captured
2.    Internal HR policy: familiarisation with the approach and elaboration of two processes (e.g. functioning and evaluation cycle, wage policy, absenteeism and retention, work satisfaction, training policy, etc.)
3.    Interview (in the context of selection, psychosocial well-being...)
4.    HR team meeting

Institutions that are eligible to provide an internship must carry out psychological activities in field of work and organizational psychology. Students can choose an internship site from our existing list “inventaris stageplaatsen” on Canvas.  

We expect from the internship site that (1) there is an accompanying work and organizational psychologist with at least 2 years of professional experience that acts as an internship mentor and (2) gives students the opportunity to observe.

The person ultimately responsible for the observation internship is Prof. Dr. Sara De Gieter.

The student is bound by professional secrecy throughout the period of practical training and must strictly observe the deontological code of the psychologists. This deontological code can be found on the website of the Belgian Federation of Psychologists.

Algemene competenties

The aim of the internship:
-    The student independently finds a suitable internship placement and fills in an internship contract that meets the requirements of the appropriate form.
-    Gain insight into the work field of the work and organizational psychologist, the institution providing the internship and related sectors. 
-    Applying the theoretical knowledge and insights from the scientific training as an work and organizational psychologist in practice. 
-    Gain insight into and reflect on one's own functioning and the required competencies with regard to the practice of the profession of an work and organizational psychologist (gain insight into one's own strengths and possible pitfalls; make a well-founded choice for the profession of an work and organizational psychologist).
-    Honour agreements, respect deadlines and communicate appropriately with those involved within the internship. 

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Stage with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The student will be qualitatively evaluated on the following elements (passed or failed):

·       The student is assessed on different competencies during the internship by the internship mentor based on a standard evaluation form. This evaluation form has to be submitted at the latest during the last week of the second semester to the supervisor of the VUB. 

·       The reflection report has to be submitted at the latest during the last week of the second semester to the supervisor of the VUB, including the attendance form signed by the internship provider.

·       Compulsory presence during two seminars (introductory seminar and the deontological code seminar). 

The final total is qualitatively assessed by the VUB supervisor and is expressed as passed or failed. If the student does not pass one of these components, the entire course will be assessed as unsuccessful. Partial results can be transferred to exams in August. A negative evaluation by the internship ensures that the student has to perform a new observation internship and submit a new reflection report in August. For the part "attendance seminars" a replacement task is foreseen.

The use of generative AI is allowed within this course to support in any way possible (e.g., structuring texts, spelling and grammar checking). Any use of generative AI must be indicated and cited appropriately (use APA style).
