Course Content

The research field of Cultural studies is a house with many rooms. There are different ideological backgrounds, methods and themes, but all these forms of cultural analysis do share common points of interest. Many scholars within cultural studies adopt a critical attitude toward what they perceive as the dominant ideology in our society (whether that be mass culture, capitalism, technological developments, …). This means that they try to find, within certain practices, how people engage and express criticism. In this course we will choose three domains to explore this theme of “engagement and criticism” and the practices cultural studies describes and develops.

  1. Urban society
  2. Education and other pedagogical practices
  3. The arts

We will organize reading groups throughout the semester to explore important, essential texts about these themes.

ALGEMENE COMPETENTIES

The student

  • can explain central concepts from cultural studies in their own words, and relate them to recent research from this field and current themes from the agogic domain (urbanity, educational practices, and the arts);
  • can independently search for information on a theme from the agogic field (urbanity, educational practices, and the arts), and connect it to recent research within cultural studies
  • can apply reading strategies and roles constructively in a discussion group to reach a deeper understanding of texts (e.g., relate them to a larger theoretical framework or intellectual history or one's own prior training or agogics as a discipline or current themes)
  • can formulate own position in group on recent academic research within cultural studies, starting from information gathered in group.
  • can elaborate in a group an own discussion group, around a self chosen scientific text from the field of cultural studies, whereby the previous learning objectives are applied in the learning of fellow students.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
PRAC Teamwork determines 40% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 60% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The evaluation consists out of the following assignment categories:

WPO Practice Assignment determines 100% of the final grade:

Within the category WPO Practice Assignment the student must complete the following assignments:

Individual assignments with a weight of 30 and so 30% of the final grade.
Explanation: non-periodical assignment

Individual assignments with a weight of 30 and so 30% of the final grade.
Explanation: participation in and assignment on the reading groups

Group assignment with a weight of 40 and so 40% of the final grade.
Explanation: organization in group of a reading group
This group assignment will be held for the period of the first exam session in June. All groups organize their reading group on the same day and are assessed on the organization and content of that reading group. The presence of attending each other's reading groups and the interaction in those reading groups is mandatory.

Absence on at least one of the obligatory exam parts (assignments) leads to absence for the complete grade. You must pass for every exam part to pass this course. If you fail for one or more of the parts, you will receive 9/20 or the average score if lower.

Seeing as this course is completely evaluated on the basis of assignments throughout the regular semester, if the student does not succeed in the first exam period, an assignment that replaces the original evaluation will be offered, only for those parts for which the student did not succeed during the regular semester (first exam period). In consultation with the responsible professor for this course.
