a) Non-dermatological preparations
-General: formulation and development of pharmaceutical dosage forms, incompatibilities, packaging, general analysis.
-Pharmaceutical dosage forms: extractions, solids (powders, capsules, tablets), liquids and disperse systems, solutions and solubilization, macromolecular and colloidal systems (suspensions, syrups), enemas, semi-solids (suppositories), vaginal preparations and mount preparations.
-Practical knowledge and training during different lab sessions related to pharmaceutical compounding.
b) Dermatological preparations
-Anatomy and physiology of the skin.
-Active ingredients in dermatological preparations.
-Pharmaceutical compounding (theoretical level and practicability).
-Incompatibility aspects.
-Some specific pathologies of the skin (acne, psoriasis, eczema, napkin dermatitis, pediculosis, scabies) and concomitant compounded preparations.
-During practical training, various recipes and compounding of pharmaceutical forms for dermal and cosmetic therapy are learned and exercised.

Course material
Course text (Required) : Cursusnota's inwendige/uitwendige bereidingen en cursusnota's dermatologische preparaten, K. De Paepe
Digital course material (Required) : Slides van de hoorcolleges, K. De Paepe, Canvas
Practical course material (Required) : Practicumnota's met receptuuropdrachten
Additional info

- During laboratory practice students have access to the following (digital) study material: Compendium, Repertorium, Martindale, National Formularium V and VI, European Farmacopoeia, TMF, Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients.

- Slides of the lectures and the practical courses are made available via Canvas.

- Participation in the practical training is not allowed when the theoretical courses are not officially followed by the student. Presence during the practical training session is obligatory. When an absence can not be justified, the student will be excluded from participation in the practical exam and the practical training session has to be retaken the following academic year.

Learning Outcomes

General Competencies

a) Non-dermatological preparations
-Teaching of the requirements for the preparation of different pharmaceutical dosage forms, followed by practical applications during the practical sessions.
-Attention is paid to recipe control, legislation and maximally permitted doses.

b) Dermatological preparations
-To understand the different types of pharmaceutically compounded preparations specific for dermatological use (theoretical level and practicability).
-To understand the interactions occurring between topical preparations and the skin as a living organ.
-To understand the most occurring skin pathologies, their treatment and the compounded preparations associated.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
PRAC Lab Work determines 10% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen Mondeling with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Note: Binnen de categorie Examen Mondeling dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Inw/uitw preparaten met een wegingsfactor 1 en aldus 25% van het totale eindcijfer.

Toelichting: Examen HOC Prof. K. De Paepe: mondeling examen met schriftelijke voorbereiding.
Dermatologische preparaten met een wegingsfactor 1 en aldus 25% van het totale eindcijfer.

Toelichting: Examen HOC Prof. K. De Paepe: mondeling examen met schriftelijke voorbereiding.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen Schriftelijk with a relative weight of 40 which comprises 40% of the final mark.

Note: Binnen de categorie Examen Schriftelijk dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

schriftelijk Pract ex inw/uitw met een wegingsfactor 1 en aldus 20% van het totale eindcijfer.

Toelichting: Schriftelijk practicumexamen: 2 inwendige/uitwendige recepten + verslagen en weegfiches.
schriftelijk Pract ex dermato met een wegingsfactor 1 en aldus 20% van het totale eindcijfer. Toelichting: Schriftelijk practicumexamen: 2 dermatologische recepten + verslagen en weegfiches.

Within the PRAC Lab Work category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • WPO Labowerk with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

Note: Binnen de categorie WPO Labowerk dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Additional info regarding evaluation

- Final mark of the total course Pharmaceutical Technology: Pharmacy Compounding is on  /20 and is composed out of equal parts of each of the four course sections. If one of these parts is lower than or equals 7/20, then the lowest score becomes the final mark that is communicated to the student and a re-exam is necessary.

- Students do not pass when preparations are delivered during the practical examination: when the requirements of maximum doses are not correctly applied or when labeling is incorrectly done (external use as internal use).

-A partial exemption for either the theory exam or practical exam (both parts) is possible and this if at least 10/20 was obtained for that part. A recapture for WPO lab work does not exist. If a particular score is insufficient (<10/20), it will be taken again for the 2nd term for the calculation of the final result.

- Transfer of a partial exemption to a new academic year: a prerequisite is that the student must have obtained at least 10/20 for the WPO Laboratory (both parts). In that case, the lab days (+ reports + lab tests) should not be repeated. At a grade <10/20 the entire practical session must be redone. Retention of a partial exemption for either the theory exam or practical exam will remain possible if at least 10/20 was obtained for that part.

Allowed unsatisfactory mark
The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
