Course Content

The course consists of following themes:

 

  • 1. Introduction to Pharmacoeconomics
  • 2. Basis principles in a health economic evaluation
  • 3. Measuring and valuing effects
  • 4. Basis principle of of cost analysis
  • 5. Clinical studies in health economic evaluations
  • 6. Economic evaluation using decision-analytic modelling (decision trees & Markov models)
  • 7. Identifying, reporting and interpreting uncertainty
  • 8. Critical appraisals of health economic evaluations
  • 9. Belgian guidelines for health economic evaluation

 

Theoretical concepts in the abovementioned themes are made insightful using examples relevant in a Pharmaceutical sciences’ context;

The practical sessions consist of integrated excercises addressing the various aspects in the lectures. The practical sessions are mainly made in Microsoft Excel.

Additional info

Course material consists of slides, scientific papers and Excel execises that are provided on the online learning platform. This course is based on the textbook Drummond et al. 2015, ‘Methods for the Economic Evaluation of Health Care Programmes’. This textbook is not mandatory but is a good addition to the course material.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The students understands the basic principles of farmacoeconomics and health economic methods and can translate these principles in concrete applications in the domain of Pharmaceutical sciences.

The student is able to develop conceptually a health economic evaluation of new technologies/drugs, apply the appropriate evaluation methods and interpret the results.

The student is able to evaluate and comment farmcaoeconomic studies on its quality and translate the results in a Belgian context.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

The evaluation consists of a written exam (closed book) with both theoretical questions as well as exercises.
