Theory:
The following topics are discussed:
- Anatomy and physiology of the skin.
- Daily skin care and cosmetic therapy (shampoos, bath and shower products, cleansing products including soaps / syndets and lotions, moisturizing and skin care products), including specific classes of cosmetics with their positive and negative properties (alpha- and poly hydroxy acids, liposomes, skin identical lipids)
- Cosmetic ingredients in dermatological preparations (UV filters, antiperspirants and deodorants, depilatories)
- Skin irritation and contact allergy due to cosmetic ingredients.
- Baby care cosmetics
- Make-up products
- Nano cosmetics
- Toxicological aspects of cosmetics

Laboratory practice (group project):
- Practical formulation of a cosmetic product, taking into account the cosmetic regulation and presentation of the group project.
- Non-invasive biophysical skin measurements to assess skin efficacy and claim substantiation
- General books on dermato-cosmetic sciences can be used as complementary study material and will be available in the lab during the laboratory practice.
- Slides of the lectures and the practical courses are made available via Canvas.
- Participation in the practical training is not allowed when the theoretical course is not officially followed by the student. Presence during the practical training session is obligatory. When an absence cannot be justified, the student will be excluded from participation in the presentation and discussion round and the practical course has to be retaken the following year.
- To understand the different types of cosmetically formulated preparations (theoretical level and practicability).
- To understand the interactions between cosmetic preparations and the skin.
- To gain insight into cosmetic preparations as maintenance therapy in dermatological treatments
- To learn the major classes of cosmetics with special attention to their properties and potential side effects.
- Acquiring knowledge as a pharmacist to fulfill an advisory role in the delivery of cosmetic products in the pharmacy, with special attention to sun products, anti-aging products and baby care products.
- Practical development of a cosmetic product and evaluation of the claimed efficiency.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
PRAC Teamwork determines 25% of the final mark.
Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Within the PRAC Teamwork category, the following assignments need to be completed:
End mark is on /20. Theoretical exam ( /15) and group project ( /5). When the quotation on the theoretical part is less than 7.5/15, then the obtained score becomes the final mark that is communicated to the student and a re-exam is necessary.
A partial exemption can be obtained for the practical group project, of which the score can be maintained. A recapture for the practical group project does not exist; and would mean that in case of an insufficient score for this part (and the ECTS credits were not obtained), the group project should also be retaken in the next academic year.
Transfer of partial credits to a new academic year: the first prerequisite is that the student must have obtained at least 2.5/5 for the practical teamwork. In that case, the lab days (+ presentation) no longer have to be repeated. If the grade is <2.5/5, a (new) entire project must be resumed. Transfer of partial points for the theoretical exam remains possible if a minimum of 10/20 has been obtained.
