The course on communication and self care products has a theoretical and a practical part:
During the theoretical courses the following aspects will be taught:
1. Hallmarks of a good oral and written communication
2. Pharmacotherapy of self care conditions:e.g. coughs, colds and flu, sore throats, headache, allergic rhinitis, stomachache, constipation, diarrhoea, hemmoroids, eye and ear problems, musculoskeletal problems, athlete's foot.
3. Introduction to pharmaceutical care
The practical seminars include:
1. Communication training (role play) in our 'training pharmacy'
2. Development of a patient information leaflet (PIL)
3. Introduction to computer assisted drug delivery
4. Introduction to the systematic use of scientific handbooks and specific pharmaceutical software.

General competences
Pharmaceutical Care has recently been implemented in our pharmaceutical law and dedicates a specific role towards the phamacist in primary care. To play this role, the pharmacist needs specific knowledge and skills.
This course intends to assist students in the development of these pharmcaeutical care skills.
After the course the student has to be able to
1. know the basic rules of oral and written communication. He/she should be able to apply this knowledge in the communication with a patient and other (primary) care workers.
2. choose a pharmacotherapeutic appropriate selfcare product for several conditions, following EBM guidelines.
3. use specific patient communication methods
4. understand the basics of pharmaceutical care.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 25% of the final mark.
Written Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
- Examen mondeling
with a relative weight of 25
which comprises 25% of the final mark.
Note: Mondeling examen (1 casus) met een wegingsfactor 1 en aldus 25% van het totale eindcijfer.
Toelichting: Het mondeling en schriftelijk gedeelte van het examen wordt op dezelfde dag afgenomen aan het einde van het eerste semester
Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
- Examen schriftelijk
with a relative weight of 50
which comprises 75% of the final mark.
Note: Binnen de categorie Examen Schriftelijk dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:
Schriftelijk examen (2 cases) met een wegingsfactor 2 en aldus 50% van het totale eindcijfer.
Toelichting: 1 casus van de 3 dient mondeling te worden verdedigd
