Course Content

This course prepares students for the required care duties in the delivery of medical devices and the role of the pharmacist in home healthcare. The aim of this course is to enable future pharmacists to correctly deliver medical devices and to develop the skills to provide appropriate care advice.

The course starts with the general theory and legislation about medical devices, the conformity marking (notified body) and materiovigilance. Subsequently, the following items are discussed: dressing materials, incontinence materials, accessories for colostomy, ileostomy and ureterostomy, wound care, anesthesia and ventilation, injection materials, infusion sets, intravenous catheterisation, probe material, aids for pregnancy, pregnancy prevention and breastfeeding.

There are demonstration classes and practical exercises on:

- Wound dressing materials, support bandages, wound care and reimbursement of dressing materials (discussion of interactive bandages, wound care of chronic wounds, compression therapy, ...)
- Syringes and needles, catheters, and the new legislation on safety systems
- Blood glucose meters and injection technique guidelines for insulin administration
- Anesthesia and ventilation, intravenous catheters and ambulatory intravenous administration systems
- Stoma materials and urine probes
- Incontinence materials
- Blood pressure monitors
- Aerosol equipment and inhalation materials
- Delivery of oxygen (discussion of liquid and gaseous oxygen, delivery, administration, convention for chronic patients, reimbursement rules,…)

Additional info

The course material consists of course notes and/or copies of the used slides provided by the lecturer and the various teachers. When possible, the course material and the slides used are distributed via Canvas.

Without participation and presence during the lectures, it is not possible to participate in the practical exercises. Attendance during the practical sessions is mandatory.

In the event of an unlawful absence, the student will be referred to the examination period of the following academic year and the practical exercises must be retaken.

Learning Outcomes

General competences

- Acquire general knowledge regarding medical devices and bandage materials.
- Recognition of the pharmacist as bandagist (small fraction master number).
- Teaching the application possibilities and use of incontinence material, infusion sets, injection materials, blood pressure monitors, blood glucose meters, probes, stoma equipment, aerosol equipment and inhalation materials, and small medical and surgical equipment.
- Acquire specific knowledge regarding sterile medical devices and disposable nursing materials.
- Teaching the usage of existing devices for pregnancy and pregnancy prevention as well as aids for breastfeeding.
- Teaching practical skills related to the dispensing of sterile products in a public pharmacy
- Applying the acquired knowledge with regard to first aid and wound care.
- Acquire knowledge about the general organization of home healthcare and the role of the pharmacist, in particular to palliative home care and the delivery of oxygen and euthanatics.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 25% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk theorie-examen with a relative weight of 75 which comprises 75% of the final mark.

Within the Practical Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk WPO-examen with a relative weight of 25 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Written exam without oral continuation.

The final mark is /20 and is composed of the respective marks obtained on the part with the general theoretical questions ( /15) and the WPO part ( /5), consisting of images, photos, figures and diagrams. To pass, the student must obtain at least 10/20.

A transfer of partial results to the second examination period cannot be obtained, nor can a partial exemption for a following academic year be obtained.

The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
