Course Content

In the course "Communication in pharmaceutical practice", the student is introduced to the different forms of communication and is given the opportunity to practice different types of communication in the WPOs.
The course is divided as follows:
• Part 1: General communicative aspects

o 6h HOC: Theory on general communicative aspects
• Part 2: Communication on difficult topics
o 4h WPO: Case studies concerning grief & loss, palliative situations, informal care ...
• Part 3: Communication about motivation
o 2h HOC: General aspects regarding motivation of behavior
o 4h WPO: Case study on motivational interviewing during smoking cessation, improvement of therapy compliance, switch to a healthier diet, introduction of more exercise in daily life.
• Part 4: Communication in low literacy & non-native speakers
o 2h HOC: General aspects of illiteracy & non-native speakers (knowledge of social map, supporting bodies, icons ...)
o 4h WPO: Case studies
• Part 5: Interprofessional communication
o 2h HOC: General aspects regarding interprofessional communication
o 6 am WPO: Case study on clarification of the tasks of other care providers, the existence of interprofessional networks such as the primary care areas, the existence of approved projects around medical-pharmaceutical consultations, the multidisciplinary guidelines on the treatment of certain disorders (MS, muco, diabetes, CVRM, polypharmacy ...), etc.
• Part 6: Written communication
o 2h HOC: General aspects regarding written communication
o 4h WPO: Case study concerning written communication (social media, media…)

General competencies

This course aims to give the students the necessary skills in communication within pharmaceutical practice.
Academic learning outcomes
1. The student is introduced to basic concepts within communication
2. The student is introduced to different forms and techniques of communication
Social learning outcomes
1. The student is aware of the importance of communication in a society and within the pharmaceutical field.
2. The student is able to communicate within the pharmaceutical work field and within his general social environment.

The student learns to adjust his communication style based on the prevailing circumstances

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other determines 50% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen schriftelijk with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the Other category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Dagelijks werk with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

The student is assessed through continuous evaluation through WPO-excercises and tasks
