Course Content

eHealth is characterized by the use of information and communication technologies to improve patient healthcare.

This course focuses on the Belgian eHealth infrastructure and how it is used by pharmacists and patients.

Topics included in the course:

  • What is eHealth?
  • Action plan eHealth
  • eHealth platform, eHealthBox (exchange of medical patient data between heathcare providers), MyCareNet, Sumehr (Summarized Electronic Health Record), Recip-e (digital prescriptions) and the integration of these tools in the pharmacy software
  • Vitalink medication scheme
  • Electronic medical record in the hospital setting
  • Standards, coding and terminology in healthcare
  • Clinical decision support
  • Patient access to personal health data
  • mHealth: tools and apps
  • GDPR in the pharmacy context including informed consent, data security and encryption
  • Databases and digital reference sources for pharmacists
  • MDR (medical device regulation) with focus on software as medical device
  • Artificial intelligence in healthcare

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • search, select and use the most appropriate IT tools for lifelong learning, research and pharmaceutical practice
  • explain how IT can help in optimizing the effectiveness, quality and safety in healthcare and be able to identify remaining challenges
  • estimate the impact of eHealth in medical practice
  • explain the Belgian eHealth infrastructure and how to use it
  • give an overview of the underlying technologies, architecture and stakeholders in the Belgian eHealth domain
  • give advice to patients about eHealth tools
  • communicate with patients and healthcare providers via specific eHealth tools
  • explain and use the best practices of GDPR and e-safety to guarantee patient data integrity and confidentiality, and explain and use the privacy legislation on patient data

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Rapport en presentatie with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Presence during the WPO is obligatory. When an absence cannot be justified, the student will be excluded from participation in the exam and the complete course has to be retaken the following academic year.

The evaluation consists of the assignment of the WPO.
