In this course, we will analyze violence and military organization in Western and non-Western societies from Antiquity to the 1990s. Central topics in critical military studies and military history (militarization, propaganda, military-industrial complex, strategy and tactics etc.) will be examined through case-studies of specific armed conflicts.

The student can reflect critically on:
-Themes and methods in military history, and recent developments in the research field
-Central topics and concepts in critical military studies e.g. militarization, masculinity, civil-military
relations etc.
-The evolution and place of military organizations and culture in Belgium and abroad
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 50% of the final mark.

Assignment component: 50%
Partial results from the written exam or assignment component (Other Exam) of at least 10/20 or passed are carried over to the second sitting. The student cannot waive the partial result if passed.
