General information

The student undertakes an internship of minimum 120 hours in an organisation of his/her own choice in the sector of cultural heritage (archives, museums, heritage libraries, heritage cells, centres of expertise etc.) or the media sector (journals, magazines, news websites, radio etc.). During the first weeks of the first term, three courses introduce the student to some important characteristics of both sectors in Flanders and Brussels, with particular attention to present-day trends and issues.

The educational team offers the student different approaches and possibilities to increase his/her chance of success in the search for an internship. The student can contact the educational team for guidance and questions well before the start of the academic year. Because of the large demand in various disciplines for trainee posts in the media industry, the student who wants to do an internship in this sector should start timely with their application(s), preferably with a concrete proposal. Sometimes heritage institutions only offer trainee positions during particular periods. These institutions often look for trainees with a specific profile and clear motivation, depending on the institution’s area of expertise. The student makes clear arrangements with the heritage institution/media company/media platform. The students submits a proposal of internship to the lecturer(s) for approval, specifying the internship organisation, the internship assignment(s) and the internship period. Once an internship contract has been completed and signed by the lecturer, the student and the internship organisation, the student can begin his/her traineeship.

Characteristics of the internship assignment(s) and planning

The student is free to spread the intern hours according to the possibilities and the arrangements with the internship organisations.

During a traineeship in the sector of cultural heritage, the internship assignment must be connected with one or various basic functions of cultural heritage institutions:

  • to recognize and collect heritage
  • to preserve heritage
  • to conduct research on heritage
  • to present heritage to a large public
  • to increase society’s participatory involvement with the care for heritage

During a traineeship in the media sector, the internship assignment should involve a form of processing information, research and communication. The trainee should be able to apply and refine the skills obtained during the Bachelor History. This includes the search for information, the critical analysis of this information and a correct communication of the processed information according to the target audience.

It is not allowed to carry out internship assignments solely in function of the Master thesis. It is, however, possible to approach a certain aspect of history that is being studied for the Master Thesis in a different manner during the internship.

Practice Exam (internship) determines 100 % of the final mark.

Within the Practice Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Complete 120 hours of  internship
  • Report on internship to be handed in at the end of May

Information:  The student has till the 39th week of the academic year (in the second examination period in June) to hand in the report on the internship. The report contains a mimum of 3500 words, notes and texts produced during the internship not included. The student evaluates in the report step-by-step the different phases and tasks carried out during the internship. The report contains the following elements: (1) an explanation of the internship assignment(s) within the workings of the internship organisation and the broader sector, (2) the internship plan, (3) a personal reflection on the work experience, with all the concrete actions and their progress, (4) in attachment a portfolio of notes, texts and end results produced during the internship.

Additional information regarding evaluation

The student is assessed on the basis of the internship report in combination with the mentor’s evaluation. The internship mentor evaluates the internship by means of an evaluation form based on general evaluation criteria (autonomy, professionalism in the execution of tasks, communication skills, problem-solving skills, sense of initiative, follow-up of feedback, general motivation) and possible specific competences included in the internship plan.

If the student does not pass in the first session, a retake in the second session is possible. If the unsatisfactory mark is due only to insufficient reporting and reflection, the student should submit an improved report. If the unsatisfactory mark is due to insufficient internship work, as reported by the internship mentor or as apparent from the student’s report, then a retake in the second session entails a new internship assignment and report.

Only the lecturer determines the final grade based on the final report and the mentor’s evaluation.

A moment of feedback will take place to discuss the final evaluation.
