Inhoud

When productivity indexes of construction industry are compared with the ones of any other industry, we can clearly see construction did not follow the inclining trendline. Where other industries fully invested in automation and digitalization, construction industry lagged behind. In order to absorb the ever-inclining complexity demands of modern buildings, a growing need for urban housing and a decrease of skilled labor on the building site, construction industry is now challenged more than ever to inverse this trend.

In the next decade the construction industry will have to accelerate the digital transformation in order to keep up with the ever-growing demands. This course aims to give the student a first introduction to these challenges.

Within the construction field in specific this digital transformation is combined with a strong direction towards the use of BIM or Building Information Modelling for both the design and maintenance of (new) constructions. BIM and BIM implementation in various fields will be a main topic that will be investigated during the course.

Besides BIM this course will also focus on new arising digital trends in construction. From automated engineering and production processes (drawing, 3D printing, automated brick lay-out, …) to data capturing with IOT and how augmented reality could impact the safety on the building site.

Interactivity and group work will be the preferred way to transfer these digital insights.

General Learning Outcomes

The course contributes to the following program outcomes:

The Student has in-depth knowledge and understanding of

  1. integrated structural design methods in the framework of a global design strategy
  2. the advanced methods and theories to schematize and model complex problems or processes

The Student can

  1. reformulate complex engineering problems in order to solve them (simplifying assumptions, reducing complexity)
  2. conceive, plan and execute a research project, based on an analysis of its objectives, existing knowledge and the relevant literature, with attention to innovation and valorization in industry and society
  3. correctly report on research or design results in the form of a technical report or in the form of a scientific paper
  4. present and defend results in a scientifically sound way, using contemporary communication tools, for a national as well as for an international professional or lay audience
  5. collaborate in a (multidisciplinary) team
  6. work in an industrial environment with attention to safety, quality assurance, communication and reporting
  7. develop, plan, execute and manage engineering projects at the level of a starting professional
  8. think critically about and evaluate projects, systems and processes, particularly when based on incomplete, contradictory and/or redundant information

The student has

  1. a creative, problem-solving, result-driven and evidence-based attitude, aiming at innovation and applicability in industry and society
  2. consciousness of the ethical, social, environmental and economic context of his/her work and strives for sustainable solutions to engineering problems including safety and quality assurance aspects
  3. the flexibility and adaptability to work in an international and/or intercultural context
  4. an attitude of life-long learning as needed for the future development of his/her career
