Course Content

Concepts of strategic management: with focus on models to set up a vision, a mission statement and a strategy for a local public pharmacy; translation to action plans; how to draw up a business model; the importance of corporate values and culture; the difference between management and leadership; discussion on the vision exercise Vision 2025 for the sector. 

Staff policy in a public pharmacy: how to work on an integrated policy (intake - progression - outway); how to recruit, motivate and train staff; management of a team.

Concepts of financial management: applied to a pharmacy (financial statements and interpretation of financial ratios).

Legal aspects: labour law items (working hours, salary scales, statutes, labour contracts), legal responsibilities within a pharmacy team. 

Digital transformation in healthcare: the evolution of use of digital tools in the pharmacy; eHealth in the pharmacy; data and the pharmacist as data driven health care professional; the place of artificial intelligence, virtual and augmented reality in the pharmacy.

Economy of the pharmacy: overview of the health care expenses on federal level; the economy of a pharmacy (on macro-economic level); overview of the different remuneration types.

Information about the lesson content, learning objectives and exam form, is summarized in detail in a ppt presentation about all courses that are presented to the students at the end of the bachelor's degree and that can be consulted on Canvas.

General Competencies

The course pharmacy management consists of current and relevant topics that contribute to the knowledge and skills related to entrepreneurship and management. Students are introduced to concepts and models applied in the business world, with translation to the community pharmacy. This contributes to the professional development and perfection of a pharmacist.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen Schriftelijk with a relative weight of 100 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

The evaluation comprises a written exam about the different subjects of the course. There is no possibility of oral continuation.
