Part I: Master Thesis

1. Registration Master Thesis

Before the start of the Master thesis and in any case before 15 October, the student must submit the 'Master thesis agreement' signed by the student and supervisor to the Master thesis coordinator. Students who go on an Erasmus exchange must announce their Master thesis topic before 1 January. The Master Thesis coordinator submits the Master Thesis topics for approval to the Education Council of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

2. Submission of Master Thesis

- For the 1st examination period: no later than 25 May, 4 pm. If 25 May falls on a weekend or public holiday, the deadline will be moved to the next working day, 4 pm, unless otherwise communicated;

- For the 2nd examination period: the first day of the exam period in August, 4 pm, unless stated otherwise;

- If the student intends to graduate in January (only possible if one or more exams still have to be taken for course units of the first semester of the relevant graduation year), the student must submit a written request to the student secretariat of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy no later than 1 November. In this case, the Master thesis documents must be submitted at the latest on the first day of the exam period in January, before 4 pm, unless stated otherwise.

Students who do not submit the Master thesis documents on time are automatically referred to the next session.

If plagiarism is established, the Master thesis will be refused and a new Master thesis will be requested in a subsequent examination period.

Consult the Master thesis regulations on Canvas for a detailed explanation of the Master thesis.

Part II: Research proposal

Information about the research proposal is given at the beginning of the 1st semester. Relevant information and documents are made available on Canvas for this part.

Learning Outcomes

General Competencies

The Master thesis is an important part of the end evaluation of Pharmacy students and must be seen as an end essay. As such, the student is expected to:

- write, under supervision, a scientifically correct text, but with an important independent input, concerning a subject in the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences, which is related to the curriculum, and this according to the general quality standards of a scientific report,

- display a sufficient amount of problem solving capacity within the studied field,

- to dispose of a general critical-reflecting research attitude,

- is able to draft a (part of a) research proposal.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
SELF Paper determines 20% of the final mark.
Master Thesis determines 80% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Paper category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Onderzoeksvoorstel with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

    Note: voor het onderzoeksvoorstel wordt een cijfer op 20 punten gegeven zoals uiteengezet onder de rubriek aanvullende informatie mbt de evaluatie

Within the Master Thesis category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Masterthesis with a relative weight of 80 which comprises 80% of the final mark.

    Note: voor de masterthesis wordt een cijfer op 20 punten gegeven zoals uiteengezet onder de rubriek aanvullende info mbt de evaluatie

Additional info regarding evaluation

- Part I: Master Thesis – 80% of the final assessment

The evaluation of the Master thesis consists of an assessment of the practical and written work, and an assessment of its presentation and defense.

When exceptional admission has been granted for registration for the 'Master thesis 27 ECTS', the Master thesis can only be defended when the predefined registration requirements have been fully met.

- Part II: Research proposal – 20% of the final assessment

The research proposal is assessed by both the promoter and 2 independent commissioners. If the Research Proposal is submitted too late, the student is automatically referred to the next examination period.

The use of generative artificial intelligence can be used to a limited extent to support the generation of the presentation, research proposal and Master Thesis. Whenever generative artificial intelligence is applied, this must be explicitly stated on the presentation, the research proposal and/or the Master Thesis, thereby specifying the elements and data for which it was used. In case generative artificial intelligence is applied but not mentioned, students will be referred to the 2nd session.

A 2nd session is only possible if the student has passed the experimental work.

Consult the Master Thesis Regulations on Canvas for a detailed description of the assessment information.

The supplementary Teaching and Examination Regulations of your faculty stipulate whether an allowed unsatisfactory mark for this programme unit is permitted.
