Course Content

This course offers a general introduction to the science of linguistics. The students is presented with an overview of the important currents and trends in the history of linguistics, from the very onset until the present day (including structuralism, transformational generative grammar, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and cognitive linguistics).. Crucial linguistic terms and skills will also be addressed.

Information for 2020/2021: both the chapters from handbooks and the articles used as course material, as well as all the digital course materials will be made available for free via Canvas. Students are, accordingly, *not* required to buy a handbook.

The students

-acquire an insight into the nature, focus and meaning of linguistics

-acquire an insight into the nature of linguistic research

-acquire an insight into the evolution of general linguistics from the onset of the discipline

-have an understanding of a number of fundamental linguistic theories, terms and concepts

-are able to carry out a partial study on ta linguistic topic under guidance, and are able to report on this study in a high quality short paper.

-master Dutch at the academic level that may be expected from a Ba1 student

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

Written exam with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Note: This examination is compulsory. The examination consists of multiple choice and open questions

Information for 2020/2021:

Written examination.

An extra assignment *may* be given; if so, this will contribute towards 25% of the final grade.

A non-compulsory trial examination is organised for this course during the semester. Those who pass the trial exam will get 2 extra grades (out of 20) for the real final exam.

The partial result of the paper will be transferred to the second exam session, if this result was 10/20 or higher. Students wishing to submit a new version of the paper send an email to the course titular (with the new paper) at the very latest before the start of the second exam session.
