Course Content

This course covers various aspects of discourse cohesion and coherence and different topics related to linguistic interaction, such as speech acts, politeness strategies, turn-taking mechanisms, etc. in Spanish. Texts and speech acts will be analysed and the production of native speakers and language learners will be compared. The influence of both linguistic and extra-linguistic factors will be studied.

Since the course is taught and evaluated in Spanish, basic knowledge of that language is required.

Study material will be provided during the semester in the lessons or via the learning platform. Addtionally, students are required to take notes during the lessons.

Active participation in the lessons is required.

Learning Outcomes

General competences

Students are able to analyse different aspects of discourse cohesion and coherence and topics in linguistic interaction in Spanish, such as politeness strategies, turn taking mechanisms, etc. They are able to compare the use by native speakers and language learners and to analyse the impact of both linguistic as well as extra-linguistic factors.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 25% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written exam with a relative weight of 75 which comprises 75% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Other with a relative weight of 25 which comprises 25% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Students can only pass the course as a whole, if they achieved a minimal score of 8/20 for each of the separate evaluation criteria. If a student scored less than 8/20 for one or more of the separate evaluation criteria, he or she cannot receive a final score higher than 9/20. If a student does not participate in all of the separate evaluation criteria of the course, he or she will be marked absent for the course as a whole.

Partial grades can be transferred to a later exam session within the same academic year, at the written request of the student.
