This course covers the presence of Spanish in the world. It addresses various aspects of linguistic interaction in Spanish, such as politeness strategies, argumentation, academic language use, etc. Speech acts in Spanish produced by native speakers and language learners are compared. The influence of both linguistic and extra-linguistic factors is examined.
Este curso aborda la presencia del español en el mundo. Explora diversos aspectos de la interacción lingüística en español, como las estrategias de cortesía, la argumentación, el discurso académico, etc. Se comparan los actos de habla en español de hablantes nativos y de aprendices de la lengua. Se estudia la influencia tanto de factores lingüísticos como extralingüísticos.
The course is taught in Spanish and requires a basic knowledge of the language.
Active participation in class is expected from students.
The study material is made available to students throughout the semester during classes or via the online learning platform. In addition, students are expected to take extensive notes during the classes themselves.

The students are able to describe and contextualize the global presence and role of Spanish.
The students are able to analyze different aspects of linguistic interaction in Spanish, such as politeness strategies, argumentation, and academic language use.
The students can compare speech acts in Spanish produced by native speakers and language learners.
The students can identify and critically discuss the influence of linguistic and extra-linguistic factors on communication in Spanish.

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 25% of the final mark.

Students can only pass the course unit as a whole if they have obtained a minimum partial mark of 8/20 for each of the individual assessment components. If they have scored less than 8/20 for one of the different assessment components, the final mark for the course unit as a whole can be no higher than 9/20. If students do not participate in all of the different assessment components, the final mark for the course unit as a whole will be recorded as an absence.
The written and oral assignments must be resubmitted during the second exam period.
Partial marks may be carried over to a later exam period within the same academic year upon written request by the student.

Los estudiantes solo pueden aprobar la asignatura en su conjunto si han obtenido una nota parcial mínima de 8/20 en cada uno de los componentes de evaluación individuales. Si los estudiantes no participan en todos los diferentes componentes de la evaluación, la nota final de la asignatura en su conjunto será una calificación de ausencia.
