Course Content

The historical background is essential for understanding the Hispanic literature. Major events in the history of Spain and Latin America will be presented through some artistic manifestations and a selection of literary texts.

This course is taught in Spanish. Course notes, syllabus and extra material in Canvas.

The syllabus must be acquired from the beginning of the course.

Special focus on grammar and vocabulary.

Dictionary: Spaans-Nederlands neerlandés-español (Van Dale or Prisma).

The student gains insight of some of the most important historical and cultural aspects of the Spanish-speaking world.
The student understands how the concepts of history, culture and identity are expressed in Hispanic literature and art.
The student discusses some political and cultural issues related to the Hispanic world.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 50% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 20% of the final mark.
PRAC Presentation determines 10% of the final mark.
SELF Practical Assignment determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk examen juni with a relative weight of 50 which comprises 50% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijk tentamen januari with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Within the PRAC Presentation category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Mondelinge presentatie with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 10% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Schriftelijke taken with a relative weight of 10 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Written exams: The written exam in January (tentamen) determines 20% of the final grade, the written exam in June determines 50% of the final grade.

Assignments and presentation: This permanent evaluation component cannot be transferred to the second session. For the second session, the final grade will be based solely on the grade of the written exam of that session.
