Starting from the Brussels, Belgian and European context, we discuss various aspects of Dutch as a contact language. We will delve into at the role of language contact and language conflict in language history, but also look at varieties of Dutch outside the Low Countries. Attention is also paid to language contact phenomena in contemporary Dutch, as well as to various aspects of language policy and code choice.
Students gain insight into a number of important phases in the development of Dutch, with particular attention to aspects of language contact. They become familiar with the spatial distribution of (and variation in) Dutch. They understand the nature of structural outcomes of language contact in Dutch, and can reflect on a number of important dimensions of language planning for Dutch.

Students acquire insight into various linguistic sociological, sociolinguistic and contact linguistic aspects of language contact in Dutch.
Students can situate various cases from Dutch past and present within a broader framework of language contact and societal multilingualism.
Students can apply insights from theory via guided assignments to the linguistic reality in Brussels and Flanders, and make the link between more abstract cases and theory in class and the multilingual reality in which they find themselves every day.
Students can report on the practical assignments in writing (via a concise research report in the form of a few slides) and orally in correct Standard Dutch, an appropriate register and with adequate use of technical terminology.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 75% of the final mark.
SELF Practical Assignment determines 25% of the final mark.

25% of the final grade is determined by several smaller practical assignments, for which further instructions will be given during the semester. In the first exam session, these assignments may be given as group work, in the second exam session ('tweede zit') the assignment may be modified and an individual task may be required.
