In this tutorial students will practice the analysis of prose and poetry in Dutch.
This course focusses on teaching students the main concepts and terminology regarding Dutch literature and the analysis of prose and poetry in Dutch. These concepts and terminology will be practice by means of key literary pieces.
-In three lectures questions will be treated by means of text extracts. These questions include: what, how and why should we read? What is the (literary) Canon? What is a genre and which genres are prominent in Dutch literature? What is periodisation and how is it manifested in Dutch literature? What is recpetion? What is the position of "littérature mineure" in world literature? What is the relation between a literary text and its historical context?
- In 5 lectures prose and poetry will be analysed and the main focus will be on key principles of the analysis of prose (e.g. genre, narrator, focalisation, space and time, characters) and key principles of the analysis of poetry (e.g. poetry styles, versification, stylistic devices and the lyrical I).
- The extracts of literary texts that will be used during this course come from both contemporary/modern literary works as well as historical prose and poetry.
The students gain insights in the key questions of Dutch literature.
The students can independently recognise and apply the main concepts of literary analysis
The students can find adequate secondary sources with regard to analysing and interpreting literary texts indepentently.
The students can reflect critically about existing interpretations of texts.
The students can independently link different texts.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 20% of the final mark.
Practical Exam determines 80% of the final mark.

For the oral exam the students will given 15 minutes of written preparation time. Students cannot pass the exam if they do not master Standard Dutch. The written preparation merely serves as support for the students. Their preparation should be submitted at the end of the oral exam, however this will not be assessed.
All assignements should be done/submitted before a student can participate the oral exam.
In a study guide that the lecturer provides at the beginning of the semester, the evaluation of this course will be specified in a definite manner.
The use of generative AI is prohibited when it comes to creating output for the assignements.
