Inhoud

This course examines the contemporary history and culture of China with a focus on modern Chinese society and its relationship to the West. The course first focusses on the recent history of China, with the opium wars, the Chinese republic, world wars and the development of communism in China. In a second segment, the focus shifts to a multi-dimensional analysis of China’s modern society, including economy, politics, education, society, and culture.

Students who complete this course will be able to

develop a general overview of Chinese history. They will be able to describe the key figures, the major events and the most significant developments in various fields in the given historical periods and relate them to the broader social and cultural contexts.
distinguish between and provide an explanation of the main philosophical schools and their tenets.
identify, discuss and summarise the key cultural characteristics of chosen topics; they are able to compare different perspectives and deliver an opinion on the topics.

De beoordeling bestaat uit volgende opdrachtcategorieën:
Examen Mondeling bepaalt 40% van het eindcijfer

Examen Andere bepaalt 20% van het eindcijfer

ZELF Paper bepaalt 40% van het eindcijfer

Binnen de categorie Examen Mondeling dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Mondeling examen met een wegingsfactor 40 en aldus 40% van het totale eindcijfer.

Toelichting: mondeling examen

Binnen de categorie Examen Andere dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Practical met een wegingsfactor 20 en aldus 20% van het totale eindcijfer.

Toelichting: Continuous assessment

Binnen de categorie ZELF Paper dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Paper met een wegingsfactor 40 en aldus 40% van het totale eindcijfer.

Toelichting: geschreven opdracht

Aanvullende info mbt evaluatie

Exams in August/September: Permanent evaluation based on assignments (20%) and writing assignment (20%) are transferred, evaluation by oral exam (60%) during the third exam session.

Examens in augustus/september: Permanente evaluatie op basis van taken (20%) en schrijfopdracht (20%) worden overgedragen, evaluatie van mondeling examen (60%) tijdens het derde examenmoment.
