Inhoud

This course consists of two components: Chinese linguistics and an overview of Chinese main literary genres. For the first component, the course offers an introduction to the linguistical and historical analysis of the Chinese language. Secondly, the course treats the development of the major genres of Chinese literature in their historical context, including classical philosophy, prose, poetry, drama and fiction. Students also receive a basic training in reading and understanding classical Chinese, allowing a better understanding of the relationship between source text and translation.

General competencies

Students who complete this course will be able to

· describe and discuss the evolution of the Chinese language in terms of periodization, key terms and characteristics as well as major forms and works.

· name and explain some culturally distinctive expressions

· be able to read and analyse a selection of Chinese works, understanding their historical context, intertextual references and style figures

· explain and analyse some major selected literary genres and works and situate them in various historical and cultural contexts.

· Prepare and present a text and content analysis of two chosen classical works of literature

· Interpret the accuracy of a translation based on the source text in classical Chinese

· Analyse a piece of contemporary literature and interpret it in its cultural and literary context

Beoordelingsinformatie

De beoordeling bestaat uit volgende opdrachtcategorieën:
Examen Mondeling bepaalt 50% van het eindcijfer

WPO Presentatie bepaalt 30% van het eindcijfer

ZELF Paper bepaalt 20% van het eindcijfer

Binnen de categorie Examen Mondeling dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Exam Oral met een wegingsfactor 50 en aldus 50% van het totale eindcijfer.

Toelichting: Exam Oral

Binnen de categorie WPO Presentatie dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Practical met een wegingsfactor 30 en aldus 30% van het totale eindcijfer.

Toelichting: Semester assignments (translation & presentation)

Binnen de categorie ZELF Paper dient men volgende opdrachten af te werken:

Practical assignment met een wegingsfactor 20 en aldus 20% van het totale eindcijfer.

Toelichting: Essay (analysis contemporary literature)

Aanvullende info mbt evaluatie

Exams in August/September: transfer of Essay grade (20%) and semester assignment grade (30%). Oral exam evaluation (50%) in the third exam session.

Examens in augustus/september: overdracht van de score voor het essay (20%) en de semester opdrachten (30%). Evaluatie mondeling examen (50%) op basis van de derde examenperiode.
