Course Content

During their sports career, athletes will face different career phases and transitions (e.g., talent development phase, junior-senior transition, end-career transition) and will be confronted with their impact on different domains of development (e.g., athletic, psychological, psychosocial, study, profession, financial, legal). Trainers and coaches should not only have insight into the holistic development of their athletes, but should also have competences (knowledge, skills, attitude, experience) to optimally prepare their athletes for, and coach them during and after every career phase and transition. In this way, trainers and coaches can optimize the development of their athletes and maximize their level of performance within the context of a holistic and integrated mental well-being of their athletes. Students will learn how to use the Holistic Athletic Career model in function of athletes’ performance behaviour with attention for specific themes with which trainers and coaches can be confronted with when training and coaching their athletes and teams (e.g., integrity, doping, transgressive behaviour).

On the basis of a behaviour change model, attention will be paid to the factors that influence performance behaviour and how performance behaviour can be changed with attention for among others the concept of psychological resilience and resilience. The framework '5C' (Commitment, Communication, Concentration, Control, Confidence) will also be discussed in detail, with attention to the role of mental training and guidance in youth sports and the influence of the parents. Finally, how to observe and develop competencies for performance behaviour and how to draw up a psychological profile and a mental counselling program will also be discussed.

The role of the (sports) psychologist and the mental coach and the collaboration with the trainer and coach within a multidisciplinary coaching team will also be discussed.

Finally, attention will be paid to the psychological aspects of training and coaching and how the performance behaviour of trainers and coaches can be optimized.

The students will make practical exercises (individually as well as in duo and in group) both during and after the lessons. These practical exercises should be brought together in an individual workbook to be presented by the student.
