Course Content

This course introduces students to the basic skills of a researcher in the fields of linguistics and literary studies. Classes and assignments are practical and hands-on. They focus on

- how to find, understand and correctly refer to scholarly literature;

- how to create and assess a thesis statement, state of the art and research question;

- how to select appropriate methods;

- how to practically use/apply a selection of methodological frameworks, approaches and techniques (potentially including relevant software).

Learning Outcomes

General Competences

- Students are able to find scholarly literature related to linguistic and literary research.

- Students can draft a(n annotated) bibliography according to the regulations within the fields of linguistics and literary studies (APA, MLA).

- Students can critically reflect on research problems in linguistics and literary studies.

- Students are familiar with different types of research designs within the domains of linguistics and literary studies.

- Students can apply different methodological approaches and know how to use concepts and tools for conducting research in linguistics and literary studies correctly and appropriately.

- Students know what scientific integrity means and take this into account in tasks and assignments. In particular, they know how to avoid plagiarism.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 80% of the final mark.
SELF Practical Assignment determines 20% of the final mark.

Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Written exam with a relative weight of 80 which comprises 80% of the final mark.

Within the SELF Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Assignments with a relative weight of 20 which comprises 20% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

Written exam: 80% of the total grade.

Assignments throughout the academic year count towards 20% of the total grade.

  • If the student is too late or absent without a legitimate reason for a specific assignment, he or she obtains 0 for this specific assignment.
  • In case the student fails the course, the exams parts for which he/she failed need to be retaken.
  • The same assignments, deadlines and score distribution apply to all students.
Allowed unsatisfactory mark
