Course Content

The course familiarizes students with the basic skills of a researcher in the field of linguistics and literary studies.

For one of the two language-specific methodology courses to be followed, the student does the assignment for linguistics OR for literary studies. For the other language-specific methodology course, the student does the assignment in the other discipline. Concretely, this means that, if the student opts for the assignment in literary studies for language X, the student has to do the linguistic assignment for language Y.

The language-specific methodology course is closely related to the general courses “Research Methodology: Linguistics and Literature”, “Literature, Society and the City” and “Language and Cognition”, as the student applies the learning contents of these general subjects in the assignment for the language-specific course. The instructions for this assignment draw on the contents of the general subjects.

Assignment for Linguistics

The student learns to formulate a research question and to carry out a small research project; the student also learns to report on the research findings in the target language.

Assignment for Literary Studies

The student learns to read and assess scientific literature and to write a scholarly review in the target language.
