3 ECTS credits
90 h study time
Offer 1 with catalog number 1024070ANR for all students in the 1st semester at a (A) Bachelor - preliminary level.
This course consists of three parts:
1) Remediation Process
2) Mathematical Techniques
3) Matlab
All students follow the parts Mathematical Techniques and Matlab. The part Remediation Process is only mandatory for students who did not pass the calibration test and did not already follow an (extracurricular) remediation process.
1) Remediation Process
Review and further practice of mathematics from secondary education. The following subjects are covered:
Algebra; linear algebra; plane geometry; trigonometry; solid geometry; real functions; analysis.
2) Mathematical Techniques
Getting acquainted with some new mathematical concepts and related computational techniques used in other courses in the first year Bachelor of Engineering. The following topics are covered:
Logic and proof techniques; vector calculus in two and three dimensions; scalar product and perpendicularity; vector product; complex numbers; functions of several variables and vector-valued functions; partial derivatives; differential operators (gradient, divergence, rotation); solving simple types of differential equations: the method of separation of variables and differential equations with constant coefficients of order 2.
3) Matlab
Introduction to the mathematical software package Matlab.
Students who are required to follow remediation process are required to attend the WPO sessions of the part Remediation Process (see the additional information regarding evaluation section for more information).
1) Remediation Process
The goal is for students to refresh and further practice mathematics from secondary education.
2) Mathematical Techniques
The aim is to introduce students to some new mathematical concepts and related computational techniques that are used in other courses in the first year Bachelor of Engineering but were not or barely covered in secondary education. The emphasis is on being able to apply these techniques in exercises and simple problems.
3) Matlab
The objective is to introduce students to the mathematical software package Matlab.
The following specific learning outcomes are targeted:
1. The student masters the learned techniques and can apply them to solve exercises and problems on an independent basis.
2. The student is familiar with the operation of the mathematical software package Matlab and can use it to solve simple problems.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Written Exam determines 60% of the final mark.
Other Exam determines 40% of the final mark.
Within the Written Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
Establishment of final grade
The final grade for all students is determined entirely by the exams of the common parts Mathematical Techniques and Matlab (see below for more information regarding the evaluation of these parts).
Requirements for participation in the exams of the common parts
Students not required to take the remediation process
Students who are not required to take the remediation process are automatically admitted to the exams of the common parts (in both the first and second sessions).
Students who are required to take the remediation process
Students who are required to take the remediation process are admitted to the exams of the common parts (both in the first and second sessions) if they
(R1) Have fully completed the online component of the Remediation Process by 23:59 on Friday of week 6.
(R2) Attended at least 75% of the mandatory WPO sessions (or were lawfully absent).
Students who do not meet (R1) or (R2) will automatically receive a score AFW on the exams of the common parts in the first session.
Students who do not meet (R1) or (R2) will be only admitted to the exams of the common parts in the second session if they have fully completed the online component of the Remediation Process before the start of the exam period in the second session.
Evaluation of the common parts (Mathematical Techniques and Matlab)
First session
Written exam Mathematical Techniques in week 7. This counts for 60% of the total final score.
Exam Matlab on computer during semester. This counts for 40% of the total final score.
Students achieving 50% or more on a part will be exempted from this part in the second term. The score on this part is then carried over to the second session.
Second session
Written exam Mathematical Techniques. This counts for 60% of the total final score.
Exam Matlab on computer. This counts for 40% of the total final score.
