Course Content

Components:

  1. Remediation
  2. Presentations
  3. Matlab project

All students follow the matlab project, and attend the lectures. The Remediation programme is only compulsory for students who did not pass the calibration test and have not yet followed an (extracurricular) remedial programme.  The oral presentations are only mandatory for students who did not follow the remediation process.

  1. Remediation: Repetition and further practice of mathematics from secondary education. The following topics are covered: Algebra; linear algebra; flat geometry; trigonometry; space geometry; real functions; analysis.
  2. Lectures: During four lectures, given by invited speakers from Belgium and abroad, the students are introduced to new developments in mathematics; Both applied and fundamental research in mathematics is covered. An oral presentation will be given on one of the seminars, or on a topic of your choice, that goes deeper into the subject matter. Within the collaboration of European universities 'Eutopia', an interactive discussion moment is also provided, in the context of 'dealing with data'.
  3. During the practicals, the mathematical calculation package MATLAB is taught. This course also provides a brief introduction to the theory of differential equations.

Additional info

The students who are obliged to follow the remedial program are obliged to be present at the WPO sessions of the Remediation trajectory part (see the additional information regarding evaluation section for more information).

Learning Outcomes

Algemene competenties

  • Cognitive: Gaining primary knowledge of the aspects of contemporary frontier research in mathematics and data science. Understanding the primary knowledge required for this type of research.
  • Affective: Getting enthusiasm for research in mathematics and data science, which increases the motivation to continue studying.
  • Skills: Reading, writing and speaking about mathematics and data science and presenting a concept.
  • I.c. the remedial process is the goal that the students refresh and further practice the mathematics from secondary education.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.

Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Examen andere with a relative weight of 1 which comprises 100% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation
  1. Compulsory attendance during the lectures; giving a presentation.
  2. Project about MATLAB.

The final grade is determined by the score on the matlab project, and by the presence at the lectures/presentation and/or remediation process (see below). The exact information regarding the distribution of points will be made available via Canvas at the beginning of the academic year.

Conditions for participation in exams: common parts

  • Students who do not have to follow the remediation process:

Students who do not have to follow the remediation process are automatically admitted to the exams of the common parts (both in the first and second semester).

  • Students who are required to follow the remedial programme:

Students who are required to follow the remediation programme will be admitted to the examinations of the common parts (both in the first and second session) if they

  •  (Cond1) have completed the online component of the Remediation programme by 23:59 of the Friday of week 6.
  • (Cond2) Attended at least 75% of mandatory WPO sessions (or were legally absent).

Students who do not meet (Cond1) or (Cond2) automatically receive an AFW score on the exams of the common parts in the first session.
Students who do not meet (
Cond1) or (Cond2) will only be admitted to the exams of the common parts in the second session if they have completed the online component of the Remediation Track before the start of the exam period in the second session.
