3 ECTS credits
90 h study time
Offer 1 with catalog number 1024084ANR for all students in the 1st and 2nd semester at a (A) Bachelor - preliminary level.
Components:
1. Intracurricular remediation process
2. Introduction to the theory of differential equations
3. Attending lectures
4. Giving a presentation
5. Creating a Matlab project
1. The intracurricular remediation program is only mandatory for students who did not pass the calibration test (`ijkingstoets') and have not yet followed an extracurricular remediation program. This part of the course focuses on repetition and further practice of mathematics from secondary education. The following topics are covered: algebra, linear algebra, trigonometry, plane geometry, space geometry, real functions and other aspects of analysis.
2. The course starts for all students with a short introduction to the theory of differential equations to provide the necessary prior knowledge from analysis for subjects such as Mechanics. The theory is later formally explored in the higher years of the training.
3. All students attend the lectures organized during the year. This concerns four lectures, given by invited speakers from home and abroad, during which students are introduced to new developments in mathematics, both fundamental and applied. Within this part there is also a collaboration with the EUTOPIA network of European universities, including the Connected community for learning and research in mathematics for technology and innovation (Clariti).
4. All students attend the presentations of their fellow students, but giving them is only mandatory for those who do not follow the intracurricular remediation program. The presentation is about one of the lectures in which the subject matter is discussed in more depth or about a topic of your choice that is treated from a mathematical perspective.
5. All students follow the practicals of the course in which the mathematical software package MATLAB is taught, followed by mkaing a project.
The students who are obliged to follow the remedial program are obliged to be present at the WPO sessions of the Remediation trajectory part (see the additional information regarding evaluation section for more information).
• Cognitive: gaining knowledge of mathematics as a powerful language in other sciences as well as the aspects of contemporary groundbreaking research in mathematics and data science itself.
• Affective: Gain enthusiasm for the power and splendor in mathematics and data science, which increases motivation to further study.
• Skills: reading, writing, speaking about and implementing concepts in mathematics and data science.
• The purpose of the intracurricular remediation program is to refresh and further practice mathematics from secondary education.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Other Exam determines 100% of the final mark.
Within the Other Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:
1. Mandatory attendance during lectures and presentations.
2. Giving a presentation by students who are not following the intracurricular remediation process.
3. Project in MATLAB.
The final grade is determined by the score on the matlab project, and by the presence at the lectures/presentation and/or remediation process (see below). The exact information regarding the distribution of points will be made available via Canvas at the beginning of the academic year.
Conditions for participation in exams: common parts
Students who do not have to follow the intracurricular remediation process are automatically admitted to the exams of the common parts (both in the first and second semester).
Students who are required to follow the intracurricular remediation programme will be admitted to the examinations of the common parts (both in the first and second session) if they
Students who do not meet (Cond1) or (Cond2) automatically receive an AFW score on the exams of the common parts in the first session.
Students who do not meet (Cond1) or (Cond2) will only be admitted to the exams of the common parts in the second session if they have completed the online component of the Remediation Track before the start of the exam period in the second session.
