Initial competences
Environmental science background
Final competences
The student possesses an overview of the most common techniques to study aquatic environments and understands the basic skills for data acquisition.
The students demonstrates the ability to reflect on (1) technology requirements of an application; (2) technical specificities of the technology/instrumentation chosen including its opportunities and limitations; (3) appropriate methodological approaches / survey designs with insights into complementary tools that can be used to strengthen interpretation or for terrain verification; (4) quality control.
Specifically for the optical remote sensing part, the student has insights into (1) the influence of the different water constituents (and their absorption and scattering characteristics) on the spectral signature, and the impact of the atmosphere on the measured signal; (2) (dis)advantage of different remote sensing systems; (3) appropriate research set-up (selection of appropriate sensor & platform processing steps and algorithms,..) ; (4) spectral characteristics.
