This course will provide students with an introduction to the central ideologies, actors and discourses of political ecology. It will review contemporary ideologies of Western political thought and of non-Western epistemologies, and equip students with the theoretical and conceptual tools to develop a political reading of contemporary debates at the crossroads between democratic crises and ecological crises.
At the end of the semester, students will be able to: i) Situate political ecology alongside other ideological traditions and across time; ii) Navigate different theories of political ecological thought (environmentalism, ecologism, eco-feminism, post-materialism and post-humanism, ecological Marxism, eco-fascism, among others); iii) Understand the specific politics of climate change and ecological issues, from a democratic theory point of view; iv) Critically analyse the actors and discourses of institutional and non-institutional actors of political ecology (social movements, political institutions, economic actors, among others); v) discuss contemporary debates and events in the light of political ecological theories.
The course material will consist of:
Mandatory material (will be distributed on Canvas):
i) power-point slides for each class,
ii) a selection of readings to prepare for each class,
iii) student presentations at the end of the semester.
Optional material: additional material in the form of podcasts, videos, documentaries.
Presence and participation is obligatory.
Students will be required to read texts (articles, book chapters) for the following lecture and participate in the discussion.

LO6. Students are able to present their analysis and discussion to peers and critically engage with comments,
LO7. Students have a general understanding of political ecological thought.

The evaluation will take place on the basis of a final written exam.
Students will be asked to answer questions on different concepts and theories of political ecology, and discuss ongoing political debates in light of the theories and schools of thoughts reviewed in class.
