Course Content

The period from the late eighteenth century through the twentieth century was one of great political, social, economic and cultural change, locally and globally. During the Industrial Revolution, cities expanded, labourers were employed in new methods of production, and colonies had to supply raw materials to European powers. Political revolutions, international wars of independence and national movements challenged the existing political order. War and science transformed human and world views. The rise of mass media added a new dimension to news and politics. The course Introduction to the Contemporary Period provides a general introduction to these fascinating transformations in different parts of the world. Through thematic lectures, the main developments of the contemporary period are discussed and contextualized.
