Course Content

The Middel Ages are one of the most pivotal periods in European history. During this period, the unity of the Roman Empire gave way to territorial disintegration, paving the way for several later European states. Christianity confirmed its status as one of the world’s leading religions and the Latin church determined an ever-growing part of religious, intellectual, political and economic life. During the second half of the Middle Ages, however, its authority was increasingly challenged. A predominantly agrarian continent became more densely populated and an increasing share of the population came to live in cities. These urban centres became leading hotspots of economic, political and cultural innovations. Contrary to what is often assumed, these developments did not take place in isolation but in close interaction with other parts of the world. The course Introduction to the Middle Ages offers a general introduction to this fascinating period. Through thematic lectures, the principal developments of the Middle Ages will be discussed and contextualized. One specific lecture will focus on what happened during this period beyond the European continent.
