Course Content

This course provides an introduction to the main social developments of the early modern period (from around 1500 to 1800). As an introduction, the concept pair of modernity and pre-modernity is introduced. It then looks thematically at the main pivotal moments and processes of change that characterise the period under review. We start with the processes of globalisation that profoundly changed the world during the centuries that followed the Middle Ages. Next, we look at political processes of social change, economic transformations, cultural and scientific change, and finally we consider family structures, gender, and processes of marginalisation and emancipation. Upon completion of this course, students will have gained a global and inclusive perspective on the history of the early modern period.

Additional info

The book will not be discussed in its entirety during classes but has to be studied independently. It is of course possible to ask questions about the book during class. The book will be part of the exam material.
