Aanbieding 1 met studiegidsnummer 4024345ENR voor alle studenten in het 2e semester met een verdiepend master niveau.
Forming the closure of the design education, the Advanced Design Studio II focuses on developing a critical view and a personal design approach in relation to detail. The student develops the design proposal from Advanced Design Studio I (or the proposal of another student when Advanced Design Studio I was not followed but a comparable studio instead) architecturally, structurally and technically with a focus on sustainability. The interplay between constructional choices and architectural expression is investigated. While doing so the impact on sustainability is evaluated (after being calculated) so that technical solutions can be improved while reducing the impact on the climate. During this process the design from semester 1 can evolve, and should be reworked accordingly. At the same time, one should safeguard that the key features and objectives of the design do not get lost. The concepts developed in semester 1 should get stronger, and the argumentation developed made stronger. Critical input on the level of structures, building technology, durability, material knowledge are indispensable to complete the above process fruitfully. The knowledge is not the goal in itself, but how the use of this knowledge deepens or improves earlier design decisions should be demonstrated. The confined assignment of semester 1 allows developing the project in an iterative way in a limited amount of time.
To achieve this advanced level, the assignment tackles a confined architectural question, both in complexity and scale. This allows the student to develop an in depth and multi-layered answer in a limited amount of time. The student develops a rich set of arguments that support his architectural proposal.
Objectives
The assignment motivates to explore architectural detail, its relation to creating an expression and its relation to sustainability. It invites students to express their view on architecture, and to be clear about the position they take. This view is demonstrated by specific, explicit and conscious choices made for the proposal, this on an overall but also on a detailed level. The choices should be clear, and should be supported with multiple arguments. This way, we aim at evoking discussions between students and tutors about the objects of architecture and the means used to achieve them.
NA
The Advanced design studio II (MA2) contributes to the following learning outcomes.
The student can:
- detail a confined architectural proposal in a technical and architectural way taking into account structure, building technology, sustainability, material knowledge while safeguarding the original concept;
- implement design concepts by creatively integrating architectural and engineering sciences with attention to the structural, material and energy performance of buildings and structures, and their architectural value and constructability;
- design innovative details based on cutting-edge (digital) modelling and analysis methods, and a good understanding of material and structural behaviour;
- communicate design details effectively using state-of-the-art physical and digital representation techniques (drawings, images, renderings, and three-dimensional models);
- expand the scale of the detail not only in space, but also in time – a crucial dimension of sustainable design – and to comprehend the multi-scalar effects of detailed design interventions.
The student develops:
- methods by which issues of sustainability, ecology and energy are used to creatively rethinking conventional notions of structure, tectonics and materiality on a detailed level;
- design skills to detail spatial and temporal complexity of an architectural project into an architectural expression and constructional solution that ensures sustainable functioning of the built environment.

The above requirements and objectives will be used for the evaluation. The evaluation will always show the full project, including the previous phases. The evaluation will be based on the material that the student presents to the jury. The grading will consist of 30% for year work (presented during weekly guidance sessions), 70% for the final jury. The jury consists of the teachers, possibly extended with external jury members.
