Admission Requirements

Enrolling for this study plan is possible after having obtained one of the following degrees:

Academic Bachelor's programme taal- en letterkunde
ADMISSIONS BASED UPON EVALUATION OF A PERSONAL TRACK RECORD
LINGUISTICS AND LITERARY QUALIFICATIONS OUTSIDE FLANDERS

Enrolling for this plan is also possible having completed the Preparatory Programme Master of Arts in Linguistics and Literary Studies (only in Dutch).

Enrolling for this plan is also possible having completed the Bachelor of Linguistics and LiteraryStudies.

Overview of the study plan

In addition to the Master's thesis (18 ECTS) and the research methodology course (3 ECTS), the student is obliged to take the Brussels subject (3 ECTS) and chooses 2 languages of which at least 6 ECTS per chosen language and 24 ECTS within the chosen profile.
Within the profile Multilingual mediation and communication, the languages German, English, Dutch, French, Italian and Spanish can also be chosen from a special list of ULB course units (Max. 1 course, 6 ECTS)

Students who wish to make use of this possibility must submit their request via the form 'request equivalent study parts ULB LW', which can be found on the faculty website STUDENT.VUB (regulations and forms) and this until 30 September for courses of the first semester and 15 February for courses of the second semester.


Module I: Research

This module consists of a course package of 24 credits. Multilingual mediation and communication has a broad remit, and the subject can be looked at form the perspective of several scientific disciplines, most notably Translation Studies and Interpreting Studies. Both involve process- as well as product- oriented research. Students in the Multilingual Mediation and Communication profile are asked to elect either "Translation Studies and Research Methodology" or "Interpreting Studies and Research Methodology", depending on which discipline is most closely tot heir chosen Master's thesis subject.

Students gain insights into the main theoretical underpinnings, problem definitions, research questions and methodologies of their chosen discipline.
On the basis of their acquired knowledge and practical research-related skills, students are able to conduct a research project under the guidance of a supervisor. This research culminates in a Master's thesis through which students demonstrate that they sufficiently achieved the learning outcomes of the programme.

Module Multilingual Practices

This module is devoted to the professional practice of the interpreter. The module consists of a course package of 24 credits.

Students gain practical experience of the occupational functions required in the interpreting industry and acquire insights into intercultural communicative skills. Professional experience within this module is also gained through a compulsory internship.
