Course Content

The unwillingness to include art as part of life is usually based on prejudices. A number of these prejudices are discussed in this course. These are framed in a history of thinking about arts education, flowing into an overview of current theories. In addition, special attention is paid to the museum as a powerful learning environment.

Practical examples and site visites are integrated to go from theory to practice. Different mediation methods are discussed, after which students themselves act as cultural mediators.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

The course aims to provide insigth into contemporary visual arts as an educational medium. Arts education is conceived within a scope that transcends "artful education", a component of social-cultural work which is fairly limited. Contrarily, the central question is: what can be the educational function of contemporary art as part of the transition towards adulthood. Contemporary arts provide a good basis for having substantive conversations. The starting point for the question of what art education is is: if art is to be a "means to", it must first be understood as an end in itself. This course also departs from the various art theories that approach this in varying ways. Students are not presumed to have prior knowledge of contemporary art. As a result, they often become test subjects themselves.

Learning results:

  • The student can analyse practical examples based on theoretical frameworks and give feedback upon it based on solid arguments.
  • The student can describe a wide range of cultural mediation methods, connected to a target group, and relate them to the theories taught.
  • The student can situate and clarify important scholars and theories in the field of (visual) arts education.
  • The student can explain the role of the museum in the 21st century and its implications for the public.
  • The student can design and mediate an arts education activity, tailored to a target group, in which the theories of visual arts education are applied.

Grading

The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
PRAC Practical Assignment determines 30% of the final mark.

Within the Oral Exam category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Oral exam with a relative weight of 70 which comprises 70% of the final mark.

    Note: With written preparation time

Within the PRAC Practical Assignment category, the following assignments need to be completed:

  • Assignment with a relative weight of 30 which comprises 30% of the final mark.

Additional info regarding evaluation

If the student does not participate in one of the compulsory evaluation components (oral exam and assignment), the student cannot pass the entire course and the final grade will be reduced to a fail (maximum 7/20). To pass the course, the student must obtain at least the equivalent of 8/20 for all components. If the final grade would still be a grade of 10 or more out of 20, but for one component of the evaluation less than the equivalent of 8/20 was obtained, the final grade is reduced to the highest failing grade (i.e. 9/20).

The partial grade of at least 10/20 in the first exam period can be carried over to the second exam period of the same academic year and the student does not have to retake it.
