Course Content
In the first classes, general introductory clarifications are given and sports law is put within a framework. Inevitably, a number of legal concepts are explained. Belgium is a complicated country with regard to regulation: the Communities are authorised for sports, except when this same sports turns into work. The distinction between law and decree is extensively treated. After that, attention is paid to the "bottlenecks" such as the decree on the non-professional sportsperson, the law on the paid sportsperson, the decree on medically acceptable sports practice, the liability on the sports fields and the disciplinary law.

Learning Outcomes

General competencies

Rather than trying to turn the students into sports lawyers, the aim in the course is to place sports law and also sports in general into a broader factual and legal framework. Law does not end at the stadium gates. Most of the problems in sports did not originate from the experience of sports, but from its exploit. From practice, it is attempted to sketch the rights and duties of the actors involved.
For students who are not immediately familiar with law, a few difficult points are discussed, in active cooperation, from a strictly personal approach, from the actual every-day experiences as a lawyer.
The formulated musings and reflections are not limited to a strictly legal view and relateĀ  to other courses. The aim is to create a forum for publicly voicing opinions and sharpening the critical sense for the actual problems in the world of sports.
After having taken the course, the student has to be able to form a personal opinion on the evolution of sports in general and sports law in particular.
