This course provides an overview of Dutch literature from the Middle Ages to the present.
This course is taught in Dutch.
A syllabus and a bundle of digital texts (Canvas) must be prepared for the lecture course. Slides on Canvas support the course guide.
There is also a course guide for the excercies, Schrijven met stijl, which explains the basic principles for writing about literature
- Students know texts of the Dutch literary Canon from the Middle ages till the beginning of modern literature.
- Students can situate texts with attention to other art- and cultural shapes as to contextual factors as economics, religion and worldview
- Students gain insight in the diversity of Dutch literary works, based on period, genre, style, …
- Students can explain things as ‘allegorie’, ‘epiek’,
- Students can find secondary literature and write an analysis in which they prove that they can discuss texts and relate to the origin of texts.
- Students can evaluate the literary value of texts.
The final grade is composed based on the following categories:
Oral Exam determines 70% of the final mark.
Other determines 30% of the final mark.

Oral examination on the lecture course (70% of the marks) and continuous assessment (30% of the marks).
For the second examination period all tasks for the exercises and the permanent evaluation must be handed in before 31 of July.
A study guide provided by the lecturer at the start of the semester clarifies the assessment in a binding fashion.
